The NFL is known as a sporting league that has attracted many people far and wide, and it has registered over 1600 players. These men are the best of the best athletes. They typically are our heroes on the field. Sometimes though, they turn out to be a bad seed. The lifestyle these players choose to lead, sometimes comes with a lot of drama. Then we hear about the most heinous of crimes being committed by these star athletes and it is quite shocking. Some get acquitted and some do the time. Check out these controversial crime stories of some of our most favorite football stars of our time.
1. Eric Naposki
Eric is a player that was very well known in NFL, and you could not risk blinking an eye when he was on the field playing. But what will catch your eye is that this player only played for three seasons. He started with Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and then later went to Barcelona. What is astonishing is that this is like no other player because he shot and killed Bill McLaughlin to allow his girlfriend to be able to collect his life insurance. The funny thing is that the matter remained unsolved as from 1994 until 2009 when he was charged with first-degree murder.
2. Darren Sharper
Darren lasted in NFL as from 1997 to 2001, and he even went ahead to win a super bowl with his new team, the Orleans Saints. That was not the end of his working career because he decided to take up another job as an analyst for the NFL network. But if you could have realized what he was doing when he was away from work, you will be flabbergasted. In 2014, news broke out that a case was to be filed against him for sexual assault. He was arrested and charged with several counts of rape and even ended up in prison for not less than 20 years.
3. Tommy Kane
Tommy was a wide collector for the Seattle Seahawks and his time lasted from 1988-1992. Immediately he left the league; the Toronto Argonauts drafted him in 1994. But after he retired, things turned out to be worse for him because he snapped and stabbed his wife to death. The two lovers had separated and as were meeting up in his fiancé’s home. He might have drugged and killed her. His arrest occurred several days later and jailed for 18 years.
4. Ray Lewis
He is recognized as the former Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl champ, but he has a history that will make you forget his all good deeds. One time in the year 2000, he went to attend a party but unfortunately, a fight broke out, and two men were stabbed to death. After the police had come to the scene, they questioned him after they found the blood of the two victims on what he was wearing. The case has never been solved to date, but Lewis was charged with giving wrong information to the police and sentenced to 12 months.
5. Dwayne Lewis Goodrich
This was a cornerback player for the Dallas Cowboys (2000-2002), but his career came to a halt when he was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed two people. It was reported that he repeatedly struck two motorists that were attempting to give a helping hand to some people that were trapped in a burning vehicle. He was sentenced to almost seven years in prison for criminally negligent homicide.
6. OJ Simpson
If you want to know how this man was famous, just close your eyes and ask anybody about him, you will get straight answers. He was a recognized athlete who turned out to be a convicted felon. His charges were directed because of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown and her friend. The incidences were so bad because it led him to be jailed. After a while, they were dropped but again followed up and found guilty of beige liable of the two deaths and ordered to pay up to $33.5 million.
7. Jovan Belcher
The story of Jovan is so heartbreaking. Having played for Kansas City Chiefs, he turned to be a murderer when he shot and killed Kasandra Perkins (22 years old) who was a mother of his three-month-old daughter. After that ordeal, he went to his coaches who were based in the stadium. He came out of the car but to their surprise, he put a gun on his forehead and shot himself after telling them that he never got enough help.
8. Aaron Hernandez
This is another athlete that received a lot of media attention. After he had acknowledged a five-year contract with his new team, he was acquainted of murdering Odin Lloyd. It was aired that Aaron and his co-defenders had lured Odin into a car but shot him in an industrial park. The news was on the waves, and he was arrested and sentenced to life in prison without any possibility of parole.
9. Rae Carruth
This was a wide receiver that had a promising career in the palm of his hands, but that dream did not last any long. Cherie Adams was shot dead near Rae’s home. The two were known to be dating, and Adams was eight months pregnant. A man known as Brett Watkins killed her, but the unfortunate thing is that Carruth was driving the car. He was later charged with conspiring to kill the lady because of an earlier disagreement of abortion.
10. Robert Rozier
This was a talented person that could have played for St. Louis Cardinals, but that was suddenly cut off due to drug problems. He never went back to playing but instead he joined a criminal gang that was in need of a person that will murder white people. In 1982, he was caught and sentenced to 10 years in jail after he confessed that he had killed seven people. He bad tactics never ended there because he later was charged with a felony and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
People always admire and look up to these players and are extremely let down and disappointed when they commit these heinous crimes. What would motivate someone with a seemingly perfect life living the “American Dream” to commit such an act of violence? These players might have been the best on the field but their crimes will be their legacy left behind.
